Album Review: JK Balalolela
Written by Chilu Lemba

If there’s one statement I can confidently make about this cd - it’s JK’s most enjoyable release since his groundbreaking debut album. Rather than spending time speculating on the reasons behind this welcome change, the bottom line is it’s worth buying a copy – even if it means you invest in a pocket Bemba dictionary as well if you don’t understand the lingo.

Harold - Stay With Me

This sophmore release from R & B / Gospel crooner Harold was well worth the wait for anyone that loved his debut solo album, Universal Love. He has on this project subtracted some elements that were present in the first set, for example there are no accapella songs, rap verses or ballads which are solely carried by his vocals accompanied by the accoustic guitar. The result is that there is a far greater focus on the musical direction that Harold seems be is taking. The sound on some tracks has a hint of jazz, and even though there are some mad funky jams on this project, one gets the suspicion that Harold is fashioning his music to touch the hearts of not only Hip hop heads but the adult contempory segment too. The offering is one hundred percent Gospel.

Have you ever sat down to think of how hard it is to duplicate a really great performance? If yes then you will probably know that it's easier said than done! No pun intended, but just ask Manchester United whether the treble will be achieved any time soon!!!! Gratefully, the soccer jinx seems to have had zero effect on Zambian music, what with the euphoria of once again having another meaningful addition to the catalogue of sounds that we can truly call our own. Any red blooded Zambian (like me) will have been drooling in line for a proper helping of arguably the most anticipated album this year…

Various Artists - Sounds of Zambia Vol. 3

The more I play it, the more this CD gains position on my list of favorites. It’s volume 3 in the Sounds of Zambia series - a collection of twelve songs recorded in Zambia by various bands between the mid seventies and early nineties. The first song on the CD is by one of my favorite Zambian legends, the late Mike Nyoni with Fungo La Njala in which he cautions women to beware of sly men who… you guessed it… have a one track mind. Other classics include those by the peeps such as Laban Kalunga and Amantanki Band, Teddy Chilambe, Makishi, Masasu, Majoza and Uweka Brothers Band, Amayenge, The Five Revolutions and Fred Chisenga. If you recall titles such as Naligomauka, Ba Manager, Bashi Malama, Imilongo, Emmanuel Mulemena’s Umuti wa Bufyashi then this CD will evoke great nostalgia, whether it brings memories of being at a shebeen, corporate function or watching those music interludes on ZBS (later ZNBC TV).

Zambian Legends - Amayenge Part 1

In the early eighties the band was known as the New CrossBones and produced some unadulterated pure Kalindula music. Over the years the group has toured Europe, America, Asia and parts of Africa. Back in Zambia, the band is still alive active and very vibrant. This album from the Mondo Music Corporation Zambian Legends series highlights some of Amayenges popular tunes such as Ten Kwacha, Mao (2X2), Mushala, Kawaya Waya and more. This is a good selection; I can picture bandleader Kris Chali singing and chanting while the Amayenge dancing queens do some waist wiggling… reminds me of nights spent at Zani Muone Beer Garden in Lusaka - before I got saved (haha). It's a compilation worth adding to your collection of vintage homebrewed sounds… you'll love this one.
