Death Of An African Freedom Fighter
Written by Jane Musoke-Nteyafas
ImageSaturday 30th, July, 2005 was a sad day for the world, but it was an even more intimately sadder day for the Sudanese and Ugandan people. Sudanese Vice-President John Garang de Mabior, 60, and 13 other people perished in a helicopter crash in Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s presidential helicopter on the Ugandan/Sudanese border. Seven Ugandan State House (Ugandan version of the White House) staff died along with him. Garang and the people in the helicopter died hours after he and his entourage had left Museveni’s ranch in Rwakitura, Western Ugandan heading for his base in Southern Sudan. Mr. Museveni who was devastated by the loss was the last world leader to see John Garang. They had been life-long comrades. A public holiday has been marked today in Uganda in honour of John Garang and the Ugandans who died with him.
