Once unknown females won first prizes in international competitions such as the Big Brother Africa Competition and the Project Fame Competition. Cherise Makubale and Lindiwe Allamu, both won competitions which have seen Zambia become recognized as having well behaved and talented women-“Girl Childs.”

ImageAfrica was once the wealthiest continent in the world. It had thriving metropolises that were centers of trade and technology. Before northern Europe had universities, Africa had centers of learning at Timbuktu and Jenne that drew students from as far away as Rome and Greece. When Europe was still a collection of clans fighting to stay alive, Africa had great kingdoms with courts of law. In 1066 A.D. when the Normans invaded a little known island called England, they could muster an army of only 15,000 soldiers. In the same year, the west African state of Ghana could put 200,000 warriors in the field. The Arabs invaded Europe in the eighth century A.D., and they managed to push all the way through Spain into France. But when they invaded west Africa, they were stopped.

On the 26th of march 2005, a privately owned open university was officially launched by his Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa S.C. Among those in attendance were the first lady Mrs. Maureen Mwanawasa, former Education Minister honorable Andrew Mulenga, Mr. John Mwanakatwe, UNZA vice Chancellor Professor Serpell, cabinet Ministers, diplomats, management, board of directors, students and staff of the open university and other prominent people too numerous to mention. I happened to be one of the invited guests and thus had a rare opportunity of being part of the celebrations held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
