Dear Diary,

Last weekend, after a long spell, we did a ladies night on Hump Day.

Tamara's Diary - April 2002

Dear Diary,

I did it, dear diary! Half way through March, I quit my job at Phiri & Patel Promotions, and nothing, not in this earth as I know it, felt as good. I did it in style too. End of the day, on Friday, I just walked into Mr. Patel's office and told him it was my pleasure to inform him that I had been offered a post at a new telecom company in their PR department ( a company that I had initially approached as a prospective client) and that I was resigning from his shitty little company with immediate effect. In a fit of panic, he promised to keep Mr. Tembo off my back and increase my salary by 50%. I asked him if he could throw in a car and housing allowance into the bargain, then hackled until he agreed.

Zambia's Democracy
Written by Sydney Mary (Poland)
I am deeply appalled by the grotesque levels of electoral ignorance exhibited by most of the so-called political science observers on the Zambian political scene. It is equally extremely disgusting to note that even international commentators have ignored the fact that Zambia is one of the few democracies in the civilized world where a President is elected by the biggest possible mandate.

Bug-A-Boo, Sista, Leave That Man Alone!

Picture this:

Monde (not real name) is an Air Hostess (Zamspeak for Flight Attendant). Emmanuel (not real name) is a business whose dealings mean he has to fly a lot. Monde and Emmanuel (remember, not real names), has been meeting regularly on aero planes for the past year at which point Monde decided that she’s in love with him. She knows that if he could only get to know her on a personal level, he would grow to love her. He was probably just too shy to ask her for her phone number or on a date. So, what does she do? On one of their meetings on a flight, she masters the courage to give him her six digits so that he can call her if ever he is ‘passing through’ her area.

Tamara's Diary - February 2002

Dear Diary,

Isn’t the year 2 pin 2 turning out to be one hell of a ride? Can I get a witness? I think my moon must be at a funny angle in my constellation or a meteor shower is occurring over my planet, because boy, is my life some ride!!

New Dictionary of Zambian English
Written by Sydney Mary

I had problems understanding politics in Zambian newspapers and Zambian discussion forums on the Internet. I asked my brother in Zambia to update me on the latest developments in Zambian English. Sent this new vocabulary and its translation into Standard English:

Dear Diary,

Usually, I love end of years. My birthday and Christmas. November 24th and December 25th. The guarenteed fun times on my calendar. Usually. Sigh Christmas is set, but I have feeling that my birthday is going to be a pretty depressing affair, and not because I am getting older. I have nothing to worry about there. When I hit 24, I decided it was a good age to be and I would stick to it for a couple more years - maybe a decade if I can get away with it …

Young, Intelligent and Single

Picture this:

Bwalya (not real name) is 26, smart, pretty and well endowed (hourglass figure et al.) A fairly social person but decent with a good job that enables her pay her own bills and be able to call herself an independent woman (slang for she can't cook). So what's the problem? Well, our sister who's been dating regularly for the past 5 years can't find a man to walk her down the aisle. Is she too sexy? Too beautiful maybe (you know the saying 'the ugly ones we marry, the beautiful ones we share'?) Is she just a one-date wonder? Men in her life are plenty, in fact she has more male than female friends; men to date, socialize with, even sleep with when the need arises (no pun intended) and enough left over to burn.

Adoption From An African Perspective

To be able to love, nurture and support a child is a very noble thing indeed. To be able to love nurture and support a child which isn't yours is truly the trait of a remarkable soul.

I threw a major tantrum today at the office. I swear, I am seriously considering moving on now. I don’t think I can take this sort of harassment doing a job that I love and doing it so well as well.

What Should I Do?
Written by Brian
Dear Trev,
I'm a 25 year old Zambian dude, graduated from one of the most expensive private schools in Zed, pretty intelligent, but discouraged. My ambition, even before I finished school was to go to uni overseas. But things are just not working out on the money side of things. So, for the past 5 years, I have had to work to put some money in my pocket but my heart is still set on going abroad, States to be specific. all my mates from school are there. I'm always writting to unis and my friends to try and get a hook up in states, but nothing is working. I'm depressed and miserable. I'm I going to spend the rest of my life in Zed (or Dead as I see it)? All my friends are chillinge excessively overseas.
