Alan Mvula is affectionately referred to as ‘The father of Zambian Rap’; a song that he performed seven years ago titled “Love Has No Colour” became the first locally produced rap song to be consistently played on local radio stations.
He was already considered a celebrity/ role model for teenagers having been a prominent feature on Zambian television in the early 1990’s as co-presenter of Teen Time, a youth entertainment programme on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation with Kelvin Sampa and another called Flashy Kids with Maureen Nkandu (now with BBC). Later co-presented a similar television show with Alick Mugala and Michael "Cuddle" Shumba, called The V-Track in 1997 - targeted at High School students. The song Zambia Moto (a duet with Chilu Lemba) was recorded in 1995 and went on to become the first social conscious rap song in which English was fused with Bemba and Nyanja, to be added to the play-list on national radio. Alan was opening act for German folk/rock band Drama Gold on that bands performances in Lusaka in 1995. Alan also performed at numerous shows alongside The No Parking Band, Burning Youth, New Generation, The Sakala Brothers, the late Ackim Simukonda & Daddy Zemus. Joined the Africa Relief Corps as a volunteer and became actively involved in organizing live free public shows for various humanitarian causes. Now a family man: a proud father of two girls - a set of identical twins, Alan is presently Programme Coordinator at Lusaka music station QFM where he also hosts a daily early morning and weekly weekend show.
