How To Be Rich 101 (Part 2)
Written by Caroline Chinungo
Have you ever wondered what wealthy people have that others don’t? Before you tell me the obvious answer (lots of money!) think about it:

Identical twins, same background, upbringing, education, etc, are each given K1 million to do with as they like. At the end of one year, will they have the same amount of money? No! One may still have K1million; one may have a bigger wardrobe as a result or one could be worth more because he invested it. You get the point. (Refer to Luke 19:11-26 for the parable of the talents).

The secret of success is not in the tools, but in the person.

Wealthy people are in some way programmed to be wealthy. That’s why most wealthy people become wealthier - because their inner wiring leads them almost mechanically to do just that. Jesus did say, “To everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.” (Luke 19:26). Chilling eh?

Why haven’t I come across people in Zambia with two jobs? Say, they work for some local bank by day and moonlight as waitresses by night? After all, who could not use that extra K100,000 per month? In the USA, UK, RSA and many other countries it’s common. Many people have put themselves through college working two or even three jobs. Why don’t we do it in Zambia? I know that K100,000 would take care of most of the groceries you need for the month. Why don’t we see ads in the daily mail for teenagers looking for Saturday babysitting positions for 20 pin to blow on pizza at Manda Hill? Parents with lawnmowers let your kids cut lawns K10,000 apiece. Build a good work ethic in them early.

When overseas Zambians will work as maids, guards, waiters – anything for that extra buck, but never in Zambia! God forbid! We’d rather die of hunger than wait on our friends. Ziko la mulungu ni lo vuta! The Black Power Band knew what they were talking about!

It does not matter which country you are in. It does not matter where you come from. (How many times have you heard this?). You may come from money – there is no guarantee that you will still have it in 2 years. How many friends do I have who lost a parent and consequently had to change their lifestyles? I went to the most expensive schools in Zambia – that was no guarantee for my future. When I got my first job, I was getting K80, 000 a month and I told myself that was too little for me to save. Then 3 years later, I was making K1, 5 million and I still could not save. It’s not like I couldn’t (after all I was still living and eating off mummy!). I just did not have the mindset for it. It does not matter if your paycheck has fewer digits than others’. Wherever there is money, no matter how little, therein lies the opportunity to make more money!

For your information

How many billionaires (not millionaires) are there in the world? Try 497! The richest of the rich!
  1. William H. Gates III $52.8 billion USA
  2. Warren E. Buffet $35 billion USA
  3. Karl and Theo Albrecht $26.8 billion Germany
  4. Paul G. Allen $25.2 billion USA

Bill Gates has been at number 1 for the past 8 years.

If Sam Walton (d.1992), founder of WalMart, the worlds’ largest corporation were alive today, he would be the richest man alive, worth a cool $102.9 billion! After, his death, his money was divided between his wife and kids, who are worth an odd $20billion each! They come in between numbers six to 10 as the worlds’ richest people.

Not so big fish – Celebrities and their measly millions!
