Placing Value Upon Humanity - Pt 2
Written by Nandila Gaskell
What are these things that add value to a person?

When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, when you receive power to positively influence, you are in fact demonstrating the qualities of value to humanity because you are allowing God to teach you in that very hour…when faced with your assignment…what you ought to say (Luke 12:12)

The following are qualities that nurture and support the individuals life and fulfillment on earth as opposed to values that endanger or threaten humanity:
Grace
unmerited favour. To stretch out your ability to help a person for the benefit of making this world more harmonious. God says, ‘my grace is sufficient to fulfill all your needs’.
Positivity
Value is so much of a positive word. What comes out of your mouth should only be words that build a person up and not to tear a person down.
Beauty
Value is acknowledging the fact that we are beautiful. ‘For we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the eyes of the Lord’.
Poise
If you value yourself, you sit-up and present yourself in an excellent manner.
Confidence
God created man and said they will be like us (Genesis 1:26) and God was pleased with what they saw (Genesis 1:21).
Love
Love is the essence of value for it is happy with the truth and never gives up. It is eternal. To value is to place eternal importance (1 Corinthians 13). It is to lose all that self desires for the benefit of sharing God’s love with thy neighbour.
Respect
Respect is pivotal to placing value upon humanity. When you respect a person, you are loyal and faithful and only want to do good to them all the days of your life.
Gratitude
Tangibly showing people your gratitude for everything means you give and give and give what you are capable of giving with an ever-thankful heart and not expecting anything in return.
Joy
When you are happy, there is unspeakable joy flowing from within and to share this joy with another is value.
Compassion
To offer yourself to a world that is hungry for God’s love. ‘She is generous to the poor and needy’ (Proverbs 31:20). Mother Theresa once said: ‘every human being counts; not crowds but faces revealing human souls’ (Joly 1977). This is to place value upon God’s people.
Long-suffering
Means when you are willing to stick through thick and thin, in the good times and the hard times, for a better world, for a harmonious society, for a compassionate community, and for an individual to go stronger in love.

Why place value upon humanity?

Who would wake up one day and not realize that the world is shaped by our thoughts and with what comes out of our mouth. There is so much power in the word, spoken or unspoken. How you see yourself is not what or how other people see you. That doesn’t matter anyway! A generation can come and go but if the concept of value is not grasped then dreams and desires will not come to true fruition.

There is so much that can be witnessed through the eyes of a person placing value upon humanity if we ‘refuse to accept negative self-concept and relentlessly hold to a better view of an individual’s potential’ (Branden, 1994). It is worth noting here that no two people can enter a room with a feeling of worth that is similar because there are different levels of value, which are not necessarily rational or supportive of our true interests. All of us absorb values from the world around us i.e. family, peers and culture. To utter one negative word about yourself, one negative thought about the way you look is destructive to the love of self. To say in smart gestures-gosh I’m slow, gosh I’m fat, gosh I’m ugly means you have missed the concept and such statements are wounding. Get back to the drawing board and re-state yourself as a creation from God- a one of kind, a masterpiece. Praise God for ‘how unique and extraordinary you are’ (Psalm 139).
