| Album Review: Lilly Tembo |

Mondo Music CorporationA handful of albums released in Zambia over past few years have the 'it' factor. This is definitely one of them. Lilly T's album is a pleasant soulful listen for anyone who enjoys smooth Afro groves. For some of the tracks, think Neo Soul sung in vernacular Zambian languages. I particularly like the first track, Chikwati a lovely pace setter for the album, Osalila, Tiye and Chenjela. The common thread in these tracks is that one doesn't necessarily have to understand the language the music just naturally connects with the listener. Among the ingredients that make this album special are Lilly's smooth voice, the harmonies, and vocal arrangements. The overall production quality is impressive as are the well put-together lyrics. Notable contributors on production include Exile, Chali and Chipo from Sling Beats and the Kula Crew and label mate Nathan Nyirenda, who collaborates with Lily on the track Mwabombeni.

For a long time Zambians have listrened and been entertained by 'bubble gum' music apart from a few artists who have believed in the hard work of the pen and paper.Sometimes I wonder if truely these guyz can claim a living on the music whose lyrics one would notice that lacks artistry and that there is not enough time invested in the production of the same .Listening to lilly t s music gives you hope that there atleast still lives musicians that that manage to connect with the listener. huts off for our girl Lilly T.

A combination between Lilly T and Nathan nyirenda in "Mwabombeni" makes a sound every ear yearning for good contemporally African music glad to listen to.I know even before I say anything that the music speeks for itself.
"Mwabombeni" to me is a story of a child acknoledging the hustles and bussles the mother goes through. Its a thanx giving song;a song of reflections.Though there is no mention to directly indicate that the song is about the challenges of an African woman, the song says that for itself the song brings out the sorrows mostly innately held by most women. Its a song of nostalgia. The first lines opens giving you the picture of a woman selling merchandise on the street, the burden of the baskets containig the days stocks with the child on her back. The chorus makes you feel like you are actually the one giving thanx to the mothers in the strife, struggles and pains they go through that we have for a long time as individuals and as people have ignored. The unmistakably soothing voice of nathan nyirenda seals it all as it captures the cries of most rural african women such as the distance between the home and the hospital. The burden of carrying fire wood.the perseverance in the secrets kept within the confines of a home where you have to wait for your husband who comes home late. Despite all this a woman still has to wake up early to find food for the family. For real Mwabombeni guys as well. report abuse
