In Zambia Today, only less than 500,000 People are in formal employment out of the millions who are eligible but are not due to factors too numerous to mention. But out of the response that was obtained from a brief survey that was carried out in the quest to gather information for this article, it was interesting to find out that the Majority of those questioned said that there are very few Opportunities on the Job market in Zambia at present and thus they have become part of the informal sector.
Due to the high numbers of unemployed people in Zambia, many have resorted to engaging themselves in what can be labeled as common-sense (means of survival).People have become remarkably innovative in their means of getting finances and sources of income to a level where a Stern observer can stare in awe at the levels of entrepreneurship skills in Zambia today.
Looking at the present predicament that the majority of Zambians are facing, from another perspective, it becomes justifiable to somehow accept without a doubt that sometimes hardship brings out the Genius in us to Light. Out of Hardship, we have seen stars rise from our Ghettoes; out of Hardship, we have seen stars rising from our Pot-holed Streets and Gravel roads.
The so-called unemployed people have become Business minded and have engaged themselves into the buying and selling of all sorts of Goods and Services. In some instances, some of the so-called employed people who are in Formal Employment have started envying the ones who are in Informal Employment due to the fact that the Informal Sector has no monthly salary description, because a person who is informally employed determines his or her own earnings by how many goods he or she has in stock and how many he or she can sell in a Day. So in short, the person in informal employment can take money home everyday.
The informal sector is as well a supplier of revenue to the Government and so plays a fundamental role in providing means i.e. (cash flow), to the ailing Zambian economy for it to be boosted. So the next time that you will see a self-employed person, treat them with the respect the rightfully deserve and see them as upcoming future employers because who knows, one day they might own a chain of Retail outlets and they might just employ YOU?
