A glittering, star-studded Born & Bred Awards took over Sandy’s Creations Wednesday night to commemorate the year’s best in music video awards with CQ and Familia sweeping wins in two categories each. The second annual awards, organized by ZNBC, were a glamorous affair with the majority of Zambia’s biggest artists and entertainers present in the house, each of whom stormed the stage with electrifying performances. It was an evening full of surprises, from Familia winning in the Most Conscious (for “Will see you there”) and Best Hip-hop video categories (for “What we do”), overshadowing fan favourites like Slap D and Ruff Kid, to being greeted by CQ’s adorable son who even tried to sing a few notes in the microphone. The late-night event, which kicked off around 22 hours, was in full celebration mode as artists gathered to greet each other outside the venue, mixing and mingling with special invited guests and presenters, including Miss Zambia 2008 Winfridah Mofu. This year, the Born & Bred Awards had ten categories and over 30 nominees. Fans could vote for their favourite artists via SMS which is how the majority of the winners were decided, save for the recognition awards. In addition to Familia’s double win, CQ dominated the Best video in Zed Beats and the Best overall video for 2008 categories. When accepting his second award of the night, CQ closed the show by proudly proclaiming that he would like to see the country’s music video market expand and cross borders. “My dream is to export Zambian music videos,” he shouted to the audience, who responded with loud cheers. OC grabbed the Best Ragga award for his club-pumping anthem “Wa’ache,” featuring Petersen. The end of 2008 has been a success for the ragga singer, as he enjoys heavy radio play for four of his tracks and an upcoming album launch on Dec. 24. The Best Afro-fusion award went to musician Mathew Tembo, who infuses fans ears with reggae rhythms while playing traditional instruments like the marimba in his video “Nandunge.” This was a highly competitive category as the other competitors, including the Sakala Brothers and JK, each have a unique sound that cannot be compared to one another. L’Vee snatched up the Best R&B award for “Zikomo” while the Best Gospel video went to Xploits for “Epondi.” Dread-locked dancing machine Technotambo was awarded for his video “Bin Ladin” in the Most Controversial category and Zamtribe was given a wake-up call as they were voted the biggest name with the most disappointing videos (there were several, according to awards coordinator Innocent Kalaluka). Finally, Jossy was recognized as the artists with the most videos.
