Former Miss Zambia UK, Mambwe Kamanga, has joined the ranks of some of the world’s top models by becoming the lead and spokes-model for Red Gorilla Clothing, which she has recently launched in the U.S.A.
Mambwe, 22 started her modeling career at the age of 16 when she participated in the Miss Zambia UK Beauty Pageant in London, she went on to represent Zambia in the Miss Queen of Africa and the Face of the Millennium. She has since participated in several fashion shows and modelling assignments in the UK and America. Born in Zambia, Mambwe grew up in England and went to America for higher education. She trained as a professional model with the prestigious John Casablanca School of Modelling, a division of the Elite Model Agency in the U.S.A.
In addition to modelling, Mambwe has studied Media Production at the American International University, in Atlanta. She now hosts her own celebrity TV chat show, International Style. The show is aimed at getting African-American celebrities from film, music and television, to go back to the motherland to renew their interest and ties with Africa, and contribute to the development of the continent. Red Gorilla Clothing is the latest urban clothing line to join the hip-hop fashion that is sweeping America and the rest of the fashion world by storm. Teens from Atlanta to Tokyo are wearing clothes inspired by hip-hop culture. Red Gorilla Clothing has the face of the silent, and yet deadly primate, as its official logo. “Mambwe has that fire, that hotness, that she brings to the Label to align it with the Red Gorilla name”, says Mack Austin, Vice President of Red Gorilla Clothing. Fashion and music have always enjoyed a creative relationship. Hip-hop has become a powerful worldwide cultural force equipped with its own language, lyrical style, visual arts, dance moves and the look. Hip-Hop clothing has been worn by virtually anyone “who’s who” in the world of hip-hop, while the fashion standard of the hip-hop community has become the unofficial uniform of suburban fans.
“In a saturated world of fashion, politics, endless rhetoric and the like … Red Gorilla emerges to bring forth something different,” says Mr Don Knotz, President & CEO of Red Gorilla Clothing. “We at Red Gorilla have an explicit understanding of our urban consumers – they know what they want and how they want it.” “As our spokes-model, Mambwe has the critical qualities that will sell our product to the target market”, says Mr Knotz, President & CEO of Red Gorilla Clothing. The New York Hip-Hop Fashion Weekend held in February 2006 saw some of the biggest names in the industry including top designers, hip-hop artists and top models. The fashion industry’s sudden interest in hip-hop stems from the enormous profit potential of this untapped market. Big and small players in the mainstream fashion industry are looking toward the hip-hop community for inspiration.
