What Should I Do?
Written by Brian
Dear Trev,
I'm a 25 year old Zambian dude, graduated from one of the most expensive private schools in Zed, pretty intelligent, but discouraged. My ambition, even before I finished school was to go to uni overseas. But things are just not working out on the money side of things. So, for the past 5 years, I have had to work to put some money in my pocket but my heart is still set on going abroad, States to be specific. all my mates from school are there. I'm always writting to unis and my friends to try and get a hook up in states, but nothing is working. I'm depressed and miserable. I'm I going to spend the rest of my life in Zed (or Dead as I see it)? All my friends are chillinge excessively overseas.

It appears to me that what is driving you to want to go overseas so bad is the fact that your friends are 'chilling excessively overseas'. Look, what you have is a very common ambition and your current situation is just as common. Seeing as you are so determined to end up overseas, why don't YOU work your way there.

How? There are institutions in Africa that can give you comparable education. I am at Wits University in SA and I will have you know that there is a significant number of American students. The reason they are here is simple: They can get similar quality education for significantly less. While you might not be able to get enough money to pay for a degree in the States, you stand a better chance here. You can then go and work in the States, or do your post-grad there.

My point in all this: Rather than be frustrated by people who can not 'hook you up', why not get yourself there. Set yourself a time period, say five years, to get overseas - and work HARD to make it happen. Rest assured, your friends will still be there, but most importantly, YOU will be there too!

Good luck!
